Role of Standards in Procurement and Supply Chain Management Procurement and supply chain are two critical aspects of organizational performance. Stiff competition in the market has called for the need for companies to strive towards streamlining their operations to meet the unique demands of their clients. One important path that has been pursued by a number of companies is the adoption of acceptable standards of operations in their procurement and supply chain. The mechanics of purchasing and all processes involved in the completion of customer sale require consistency in behavior and codes of conduct that govern these processes. The need to adopt these rules and consistency in behavior has led to more emphasis on the role of standards in procurement and supply chain. There is consensus among researchers that businesses that do not adopt required standards in their procurement and supply chain activities are likely to lag behind. This implies that the importance of standards in procurement and supply chain can therefore not be gainsaid. First, standards provide the benchmark upon which good practices are developed, implemented and nurtured.
